Learning Support
Unity College aims to provide all students with the opportunity to achieve to their personal best in all areas of education – academic, emotional, physical, sensory, social, behaviour, spiritual and cultural. We also cater for a wide range of students with learning difficulties, disabilities and those who are gifted.
All staff, with the assistance of the Learning Support Department, help students become independent learners who are confident, resilient and motivated. Learning Support at Unity College takes on many forms including:
- Support provided by learning support staff within the classroom
- Small group and 1:1 support both within the classroom and/or the Learning Support rooms on each Campus.
Unity College provides Learning Support Coordinators on both the Junior Campus and Middle/Senior Campus, and their role is to identify the needs of students in each classroom and coordinate support staff to implement the level, specialist assistance and support required.
Junior School Support
In the junior years of education we use the ‘Response to Intervention Model’ to determine the level of intervention required for individual students. Early Intervention is essential, and Unity College uses highly recommended Literacy programs in the Early Years such as Pre-Lit, Mini-Lit and Multi-Lit to assist students with Literacy difficulties.
Middle and Senior School Support
To further develop and enhance the Learning Support Program, the college provides ongoing appropriate resources and professional development for teaching and in class support staff, with the aim of delivering successful learning experiences for all students.
Gifted Education
Specialist support programs are offered to students on both the Junior and Middle/Senior Campus who have been identified as gifted. These support programs include:
- Enrichment programs
- Stretch Academy
- Australian Maths Trust Challenge
- Uni of NSW Competitions
