The term is flying passed with only a few weeks left. I really enjoy the time leading up to Easter. Our various staff devotions on Easter gives many perspectives on the importance of it. Everyone has their own idea of explaining the true meaning which always end in the same core message to all of us. Jesus gave his life to save us! What a sacrifice!
Sports Day is coming up this Friday 22 March. I am looking forward to seeing our students compete in different races and events – always an exciting day for staff, students and parents who attend. It is great to get to know our students on another level and to build relationships.
Our Show Team Information Evening about the show arrangements, practice times, expectations and events etc. was held on the 13 March. Many students with their parents attended the sessions. I am also very proud of our students that are willing to help with feeding the animals over the weekend – volunteering – thank you. A great start to our Ag show program at Unity. Thanks to Debbie, Jessica, and Melissa for doing all the presentations on the evening.
Year 12 Mentoring Program at Unity – I have the privilege to mentor a Year 12 student at Unity. I really value the time booked in every three weeks to discuss general wellbeing, schoolwork, progress with assessments, time management, goalsetting and how they are going in general. It is very satisfying to see a young person grow at so many levels and to give them the tools to have success in life beyond school.
What is the most important aspect of being a mentor in a student’s life?
A mentor doesn’t have to have all the answers, they just need to be willing to listen and share what they know. Engaging with a mentor helps unlock potential in a mentee’s personal, academic, and professional growth. Career goals are evolutionary, and good mentors assist students with their professional evolution.
Harmony Week (20-26 March): “YOUbelong” Day at UNITY
Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
YOUbelong Day: Our first #YOUbelong day will be a combined JS/MS/SS celebration on Thursday 21 March (Week 8). There will be a focus on BELONGING in the MS/SS Assembly during Home Group – JS classes are welcome to view the live stream, where the Student Leaders will share their devotion, and an explanation from the Year 9 Ambassadors about our shared lunchtime at our Junior School.
How to Celebrate?
Let’s come together with friends and family and through schools, workplaces and our wider communities to celebrate our diversity.
Why Orange?
Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.
Our Cultural Diversity
Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.
An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity.
All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.
Our CALLING as staff at Unity College
I see every staff member at our College as someone who has been called to serve in our community. Benjamin Franklin articulated the word calling so well: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” That is what we are doing as staff here at Unity every day.
I would like to remind you and your children, that we are here to support you if any need arises. Our main objective here at Unity College is to put our Students First and to lead the Unity Way as staff, students, and parents.
Thank you for your ongoing support and remember the door is always OPEN!
Blessings
Francois
